“Until the River has Chilled Your Bones” by Pam Gibbs

Knee-deep is not too deep unless the river is up,
churns brown, swallows your feet, holds you under
when you try to stand–it wants you downstream
and you know this too late in that split of time
when you begin to slide over the river stones,
before that hand takes hold of your collar.

I am witness that knee-deep is not too deep
until the river has chilled your bones.
