“retreat” by Tyler Worthington

Here’s the story of a painter
delightfully eccentric
whose favorite place
to sit and paint
for to him
it was quaint
he would say
“perfect, perfect as rain”
it was an insane asylum
named after a saint

who or which one
he always forgot
the road of gravel and dirt
leading to his studio
it’s still lined with willow trees
haphazardly growing this way and that
across the lawn over the hill
far from the nearest town
old enough to have seen a few wars
old enough to welcome the kids
who couldn’t kill

meet the locals
they’re an interesting bunch
for example the gentleman there
see him by the pond
Bartholomew is his name
he’s taking his lunch
and feeding half of it
to his pet snapping turtle
how they established their friendship
remains a local mystery
nice fella
his vocabulary is a bit limited
not a big talker
but very kind

feel free to sit out front for a spell
drink some tea
relax and sigh
and thank the lord for feeling
and once more for felling well
can’t wait to see what the painter has made today
an abstract a landscape
who knows
he’s a jack of all trades
sitting in the tallest room
suits him just fine
I guess there’s more to loneliness
than meets the eye
