“Wreathe” by Karen George

As I round the bend, seven geese
fly over the frozen lake, land near
shore, form a circle. All but one
lower their squat bodies, plumping to attain
ample mass in contact with the ice,
as if a warm nest of eggs
they will hatch. One goose stands, apart.
