“Anecdote of the Jar” by Jeremy Paden

She placed a jar in Kentucky
and round it was the lawn, the jar
too was round, but the lidless glass
does not matter.

The lid removed, however, does,
and from the lip the lighting bugs
she had collected flew away
to light the sky.

She loved the trapping of the bugs,
catching each in her hand, counting
as their number grew, and then she
placed the jar, lidless, on the lawn.
