“For Janet Frame” by M J Eaton

New Zealand your backdrop
Frantic family life
open spaces
loneliness
your teeth and hair
your misery.
Misdiagnosed and mistreated
still your poems and stories
won awards
even delivered to you
in the hospital.
Ever seeking your muse
which you called imagination.
Overwhelmed by people
underwhelmed by people.
Your work
oh my
your work
saturated with knowledge
extreme, outdone only
by your innate intelligence.
So delicate, yet so strong
in intention.
Would that I had known you
before you left.
I would have befriended you
and taken nothing.
