but his rough cat tongue keeps
sticking to its lattice of freezer-burn
and it hurts just enough that he

begins to dread the next lick in case
cold goes to his head, or the popsicle
melts too quickly and sticky sugar mats

his paws, or the whole sweet bit falls off
the stick and then he’d have nothing
left, not even the stick, because

if a child passed by she might need it
as a tongue depressor or a pink-stained
log for a toy cabin. One can’t disappoint

children, but he’s afraid if he saw one
he’d probably tell her terrible things about
violence and death, he might not be able

to stop himself. The lion growls, imagines
her face as she first learns of sharp teeth,
and thinks he’d better rend the popsicle in two,

but what good would it do?
