Carnegie is Turning 21The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning will be celebrating it’s 21st birthday on September 13th. The festivities run from 6-9 PM in Gratz Park. The Carnegie Center is a huge supporter of the Lexington literary community and has worked with Accents on a number of occasions.

Katerina Stoykova-Klemer recently interviewed Carnegie Executive Director Neil Chethik about the anniversary.

Katerina: In September 2013, the Carnegie Center will celebrate its 21st birthday. Congratulations on this landmark! Could you please give us a brief overview of the services the Carnegie Center has provided to our community over the years? 

Neil: The Carnegie Center is devoted to creating a “Cycle of Literacy” in Central Kentucky. Toward that end, we teach classes in reading and writing for children and adults at every life stage. We also offer French, Spanish, and computer classes. We’re unique in the nation in that we help people at every level of writing: those who are struggling to read and write as well as those who are masters of the craft and are published or want to publish.

What do you think is the greatest accomplishment of the Carnegie Center?

I’m most proud of the work we do with kids. For example, we have a free tutoring program that serves 180 children. They get one-on-one attention from the same tutor/mentor for one hour per week for the whole school year. The impact on the lives of the children and the tutors is enormous. And the value to our community—helping children avoid lives of illiteracy and poverty—is equally important. 

How will you celebrate the 21st birthday?

With a party, of course!  It’s on Friday, the 13th of September, from 6-9 pm, in Gratz Park, which is right behind the Carnegie building. We will have Coralee and the Townies playing music and the Holler Poets offering their first ever “Holler in the Park.” The poets include Frank X Walker, the state’s poet laureate, and Maurice Manning, a Pulitzer Prize finalist. We’ll have delicious food and drinks too. Please join us!

What new projects and events do you have in the works? 

We have an exciting year planned, including Joel Pett: A 30-Year Retrospective, an exhibit of the political cartoonist’s work on Sept. 18; the Kentucky Women Writers Conference on Sept. 20-22; International Eating & Reading Night on Oct. 24, and a celebration of The Great Gatsby on Nov. 9.
