When we entered the building,
the lady behind the desk at the main entrance
told us to go to the first room on the left &
wait for her.
We were a group of 13, 4 staff & 9 students serving
one week of community service, foregoing romance
in favor of feeding the needy &
giving of ourselves for the good of another.
Our host informed us we would be boxing carrots
that would be distributed to the needy throughout
Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods.
She told us 30 persons normally box three tons.
Applying Henry Ford’s assembly line to carrots,
we organized, prioritized, & set about
our task at hand. Other groups boxed other foods,
breakfast, for the most part. We set a goal, four tons
& no less We worked. We learned. We made boxes.
We piled one pound & two pound bags on our lines.
We made adjustments. We sorted, counted, labeled
& when our shift ended, we had boxed 11 tons.
