People Waiting at the Kidney Doctors’

One man wears a suit. He’s balding, wearing glasses.
Solemn, he looks down into his lap, so he looks like
he is reading himself. He played basketball, I think:
better than I did, but not enough to boast about.
It was just for fun. More serious were pranks he’d try
out on the guys, not really mean but just surprising,
so they’d know they were alive. Actually, it made
life fun. It isn’t like that, now. At a certain point,
you can count on living to get less enticing, more
lead soldier than ringmaster. Now he looks up like
he’s joined us. Why? A healthy looking woman,
attractive, comes out, all business, and they leave.

The couple in the corner, holding hands, isn’t thrilled
to be here. Not with what they know that fills her eyes
so she can’t focus on the rest of us. Either she is sick,
or he is, but he’s the one who helps. She understands,
now, the turn toward days too heavy to spend waiting.
It’s not fine, not OK. Her tears are 3-D glasses making
everything look real.

An international man comes out, sits down beside me,
though there are plenty of other seats. He doesn’t go
by rules, sits where he wants to be. His flowered shirt
crashes into his plaid pants. He is comfortable inside
himself. I’m comforted by him, thumbing magazines.

I’m out of place. I only came to get a script for pills
that didn’t last the month. Some mistake that doesn’t
need a doctor to unkink. I won’t ask them to validate
my parking card. The mother and the daughter who
just entered are in the game. It’s early; they’re ahead
by half a lifetime. The mom is pretty, groomed well,
as though make-up changes things, like prayer. Her
daughter’s bulky, stunned, and doesn’t see the room.
She should have the years. I could use the fatalism. E
