survives to speak of it,
how it leaps between shadows,
kicking its hooves together,
grinning like a prune. Okay,
man-in-the-moon, Jack-of-
the-lantern, hook-for-a-hand.
You know, scary story. Just
a metaphor, really. Nothing
but a coat rack, branches
rustled by night winds. Mouth
the word into the darkness
under your bedskirt once, 
and see if something iron
inside you doesn’t curl.
