Trip
When she was in high school, my daughter used to twirl
a flag in band.  Along with a number of band parents,
I went on every trip.  Did you ever wonder why
the scientific community referred to getting high on drugs
as a trip?  You never had to pack a bag, and jet lag was nonexistent.
One spring break while my teacher colleagues filled suitcases
with sunscreen and bathing suits, and headed to Florida,
a few of us spent the week in Paris and London.
Though we didn’t see the queen, we did sit down to high tea
at the Crypt Cafe at St. Martin’s Church.
Something about the word, “crypt” still sends a chill up my spine.
Maybe it’s because I watched Dark Shadows every afternoon
when I came home from school.  The creaking coffin lid
of vampire, Barnabas Collins, was unnerving.
That same tv family also had a witch, werewolf, and a zombie.
All of that was back in the seventies.  Now everyone knows,
that decade was a trip.
