I guess what my father felt

blue flashing lights

hearing a yell, running steps

pulling a hard curtain aside to look out the window

stepping out the door into humid cool air

early summer morning

emergency personnel at the pool

a small crowd

backdrop of people staring out windows

I get it, a child drowned

the same age as me

 

what is harder to understand

is how I felt

not allowed to go on a

school trip on a boat

because if it capsized

parents would save their own

and not me

 

alone in a classroom

teachers’ aide cleaning

windex sprayed on

desks and white board and chairs

ceiling lights powered off

but ample dull light

confined to a desk

nothing to do

but think about what I feel

alone and sad and punished

for what my father felt
