it’s warm, just barely warmer than the air,
belching? roaring? dragon-esque? adjective adjective adjective

Trite words, word-wall, word-membrane
“inside” and “out” divide the fire and the teenager,
osmosis and transmission, taking the real and making the brain:
what is fire, really, but none of the words I’ve already used

this fire, this fire only a couple people saw,
this fire is campus police office (WILDCAT car, tattooed)
fire truck, second cop car, red and blue dancehall on the tree-leaves
this fire is two sleepy teenagers with backpacks watching from across the road

define a thing by that which surrounds it

this fire is put out by a fire truck in a very boring and safe and routine manner

this fire is gone, this fire was indescribable, this fire was unknowable.

this fire was a piece of furniture we couldn’t recognize and kept on walking
this fire was an obvious metaphor for a thing
