I learned on my first grade soccer team that it doesn’t matter what place you come in.
After training for a half marathon, I walked a 5K with my grandma… knowing I could have beat most of the other runners to the finish line.
What did that mean anyways.

I have changed my mind since,
and decided there is a huge difference between first and last.

Always only one first.

First impression,
first laugh,
first kiss,
first base,
first time in your bed,
first time in my bed,
first time in my bed with you…

And then a new set of firsts:

First time in my bed without you.
First time in my bed with someone who isn’t you.
Kissing someone who isn’t you.

And there are still so many more lasts than firsts.
Last drink, last drink, last drink,
Last slice or dice or cry,
Last goodbye to you,
Last time calling you in the middle of the night,
and somehow time has always expanded for one more last.

And one more last.

But all I want is a fresh start and another first time.

But time is only making room for another last.

So I will make this the last poem I write about you.
