Deep in the rocks,

South of France,

we visited paintings

of bison, lions.

 

We watched wild horses,

mammoths, ibex; ochre mist

sprayed perfect and thin,

red mouth to printed hand—

 

we know that hand, its

many scenes, its

crooked finger just a tool or

maybe what we call a signature.

 

Why did ancestor lie on

narrow shelves

working recessions by

torchlight?

 

On damp and glistening shale

in silence the artist heard as

limestone dripped off-rhythm—

coded signs?

 

Did the ancients summon

beasts of prey, or supplicate

fierce animal souls by

brushstroking their grace?

 

Thirty thousand years have

passed and Hominin Club is

painting still, don’t ask us why.

 

We treasure violet grey for

skies, yellow spots for a

herd’s escape, darks for

antlers, hooves, and eyes.
