It’s been held with banana clips, scrunchies,

And barrettes that trailed ribbons and beads

It’s been dyed red, the underside shaved off

And you, my love, you have brushed it from my face

And tucked it behind my ears.

 

One day when I can no longer care for it

Our girls will consider cutting it short

I want it long

Please tell them

Leave it long

Tell them to sit with me

And brush my hair as I brushed theirs

When they were small

Tell them they must brush the silver strands smooth

They must brush them until they shine.
