DUI

All I ever needed was

a sign-

trees for my mind to

tumble through in an

existential haze,

traffic lights for this

flow of consciousness

so I can find my exit,

a reason to change

as I spend my days

travelling in the turn lane.

Opinions on my bumper

(scratched from a wreck)

invisible as I cruise the

neighborhoods, afraid I’ll

get pulled over without

ambition and proof of

insurance.

I am always paranoid when I am driven to write an extended metaphor crossing the length of a poem–paranoid the message will get lost in cheese.

This poem did not do that, sir.
    Deeply felt.
