And here, I saw

the pointed hooves, the poked-out tongue,

and it made me run.

 

Pound my feet through:

alfalfa and greasy grass and chicory and cow pies

and thistles we missed in The Great Pasture Purge.

 

And I didn’t care about:

the red-to-blue-to-green welts

from my book-heavy bag

                or,

the ticks I would seek-to-their-hide

behind my knees, in my hair,

                or,

the bus not quite hid ‘round the bend,

full of kids who’d laugh because they hadn’t seen what I saw.

 

I cared only about

the pointed hooves, the poked-out tongue

that made me run.

 

Between sucking air

and shedding tears

I called out to Mom

     who called out to Dad

          who called out to The Grands

               who made Dr. Wall come quick.

 

And together, in the chute,

with ropes and chains

we stilled the hot body

and

pulled the calf

with the pointed hooves, the poked-out tongue

who peeked out too early.

 

The one that died inside my

‘heifer’s-now-a-cow’.

 

The one that made me run.

But it’s the calling Mom, calling Dad, that really struck home–and how the vet would come to your house. You’ve captured the way I saw my tight-connected community and family, and the sense of normalcy undone that brings me home. I enjoy what I learn when others comment on what they see, but I love it when I don’t even think of how something works–just that it does! Thank you for a great poem!
