and that’s almost as good. I don’t dream

through coursing chemistry I cannot control,
nightmare enough for two, go places

gravity fears. This is the land
of broken bones. Bruises heal from inside

out. This is the land where I expected
everything to happen but instead

it didn’t. When I was six I did puzzles
in the hall. By twenty I was bloody knuckles.

I watched a man load all his shit
into the back of a Dodge Shadow. I cried

because he was all I’d known of Portugal
and I wanted more. I wish my body

was a hatchback with foreign plates.
Now I grind myself into the everyday:

teaspoon, mailbox, windowsill.
We don’t mean to hurry

to our endings. But we do.
