our name a better fit
for the sudden light,
like heat lightning,
no sound or rain,
just a flash across the sky.

and so I chased them
all around that postage stamp yard

as the football field across town,
to put them in a mason jar, slashed lid,
as if that might save them.
And I, though squeamish of bugs,
would pick them up,
fluttering jewels in my hand.
How long did summers last then?
Years, and a single evening
went on for days and days.
Now summers last an hour or two,
swirled together in my mind—
and I am shut up in my house at night
when the lightning bugs dance,
safe from my hands and prisoning jars.
There are so few in the city—just a flash
here and there—and the heat lightning
is lost in the haze of urban light.
I love “fluttering jewels in my hand” and “a single evening/ went on for days and days.” Lovely, and brings back such wonderful memories.
