Gingko Day
Startled, I jumped as fall swept across my calendar.
Strong against my hope that summer would linger,
Pumpkins and ghosts and flying leaves swirl the
Season around my ears.
I yearned for a respite against the racing days.
I had not caught enough of summer, I pled.
The oak laughed and dumped great bushels of mast.
Squirrels ignored my hope and stored their trove.
Daisies faded, having stayed too long at the fair.
Saucy mums lorded it over wasted summer bloom.
Rainbowed trees let their leaves fall away,
Evergreens wore a shrunken look,
Huddled close to ward against the cold.
But not my Gingko, he stood arrayed in extravagant gold,
Every leaf intact, defying calendar, wind and frost.
Did he care his stubborn stand was a balm
Against the dread gnawing at my bones?
There he stood for seven days,
Laughing as disapproving mother earth shakes her
Head and passes you by giving us another
Day before your final dance. One more day
To calm my dread of season’s end.
But the end came, with no other warning than time,
Standing tall this morning, your leaves went a tumble
From the tallest top. The ring of captured sun growing
Ever wider at your base,
And the music of your last dance tinkled
And whispered a parting song.
Caught in a shaft of sun,
You were a diva with an aria,
A dancer at highest lift,
Van Gogh gone aboreal.
As I walk into the glory of your final gift,
My heart loosens to let the season pass.
Will winter linger while I dawdle and waste,
Or will it speed by as heedless of my
Faulty reckoning as the summer just past?

Van Gogh gone aboreal. These are two of the amazing lines I admire in its abundant detail. I also admire the use of “he” to identify the male ginko, because it is so unusual to know the gender of a tree.
