The last time I was in a bar
no one was eating
black bean burgers
among the clink of ice cubes
rolling empty in glasses.

No one was reading poetry
about awkward sex,
or sharing tears over
brotherly tributes,
or delving sacred wheels
and mysterious goddesses.

The last time I was in a bar
a man I didn’t know
grabbed my ass
and huffed his smoky nothings
somewhere near my neck;
a friend, recently dumped,
threw up over her earth shoes,
the splatter tie dying
nearby bell bottoms;
a whiskey drenched cover band
slaughtered Grand Funk Railroad;
and my legs looked damn fine
in a leather fringed mini skirt.

So, thank you for telling me
about this place, this marvel
of night and poets,
and when I looked
where my sweet potato chips
had been and saw only
the crumb littered plate,
it seemed a fitting trade
for this nourishment
of new memories.
