He enters the room like a swirling  

Dervish, gracefully steps 

over the sleeping dog, then lifts  

her favorite toy from her bed and smiles 

 as he throws it over his shoulder. Awake,

the gleam in the dog’s eye matches 

his as they run around the 

table. He laughing, she barking ,yet

they both seem to understand. Dust scatters

as they run and then  as suddenly as it began 

calm. Dog and boy collapse in a heap, resting 

his head on her belly he smiles – blue eyes shine  

with the joy of being.
