                 For Jawanna

Wearing a brimmed hat, she delivered
a children’s sermon about recycling plastic bags.
That was the first time I saw her.

I didn’t know then
that years later her condolence words
about grandparent-grandchildren relationships
would be so meaningful, so comforting
in the wake of my first deeply felt loss: my maternal grandmother.

And I didn’t know
years later, upon becoming a mother,
I would need so much support
this unlikely friend bringing hand-me-down
gifts from her own grandgirls,
consignment store buys, books of all sorts, and Coney,
a lavender beanie rabbit, who still sleeps
with my three year old.

Herself once a single mom, now a scientist-artist,
a journaler-gardener-Yaya
a goat-farming, praying, feminist,
a poet, a teacher, a servant.
This is my friend:
a drumming, owl-calling, flower-
identifying, gender-including, ingredient-
substituting, dish-washing inspiration.

It is because of her that I kept a pregnancy journal
       began writing my stories.
Because of her I’ve done raku
       walked a prayer labrynth
Because of her, the eagle in that poem I wrote that time
no longer “caws” but screeches.
That is what eagles do,
apparently. We must be accurate

the age of my mother
whose courage and quirk simply sings
from the brims of those hats Sunday mornings.
