The chiefs and braves club
held its first meeting at the 
screen-porch camp on cement block posts, 
stout above the lake with its 
cypresses and bass.
 
Daddy packed his pipe and
smoked it driving to the meeting
.32-20 revolver on the plaid seat between us 
giving weight to the occasion.
 
Wheels crunched the gravel as
we parked along the boat sheds
smelled the barbecue cooking felt the 
purple sunset spreading sky and water.
 
First order of business dads and boys 
along the high bank, cypress needles 
underfoot, down in the lake long mossy 
logs dark terrapins perched in rows.
 
We took our turns dads first, one at a time 
they aimed their handguns, fired and splintered 
off the shells and sprayed the soggy bark of logs.
 
We boys smelled those hot revolvers
steadied our little wrists and fired, 
hands jumping and ears shocked back,
we missed but begged to cock and aim again, 
trembling, this time more determined as we
heard the bullets hit their marks.
 
Satisfied as full dark fell all climbed the steps 
the dads inside lit up and rumbled talk like 
brotherhood men on Sunday morns.
 
Boys stayed out on the wide screened 
porch where rocking chairs amused and
offered something we could twist to the 
dangerous and loud. These older boys I 
barely knew sensed me, their natural prey.
 
In the darkness insults flew I raised a rocker 
brought it down on a numbskull kid blood
flew I cried loud tears of victimhood as if
the blood were mine. 
 
That worked, and much confusion reigned as
angry dads, starving now, told the kids shut up 
and ate their plates of pork and sauce and 
taters standing, jangling nervous keys to leave.
 
Driving home my father gently asked 
what the boy had done or said 
to make me raise that rocking chair –he 
called my mother a real bad name you always said 
if a man hears that, he’ll fight.
 
In dashboard light I saw his surprise and after 
silence, with a low low rhythm, he quietly laughed
a little while then said, don’t do it again.
 
I thought those boys would catch me on my bike 
one day but they didn’t. The club of chiefs and braves 
collapsed, flat died, it never met one time again.
 
Years passed before, lying in my camp, stars 
in the spring, crickets and frogs droning on, smelling 
a lake with its cypress and pine, I heard those turtles 
speaking slowly to me, dark turtles inside, I could not 
move, they had a lot to say, one turtle at a time.
