I keep hoping the Borges who loved the fame we brought each other and feigned interest in academics will again make an appearance, like an old and angry actor who refuses to believe that time has stripped his body of his gift. Let’s be clear. I’m fine with his never coming round. It’s not like we need each other anymore. But it’s not like we’re hostile either. I live and let live. And while Borges spun his words I grew and was happy. Sure, I’ll admit it. But I don’t need him to save me. I never did. I was always part of something bigger than that Borges and bigger than me. I rub shoulders now with Spinoza and Dante, Joyce and Quevedo. But we never talk to each other. I’ve little use for rocks or tigers, whether made of paper or orange and black and on the prowl. I’m happy to be just me, to lounge and lie about. Something Borges never could understand. He could never just sit and wait. He always had to read or be read to, write or dictate. His mind was always somewhere else. Now it’s just me and my collection of suburban myths, the games I used to play with time and books. My world is just words, words, words. Everything is unforgettable so long as it can still be read and understood. But that other one, that Borges, the one to whom nothing ever happens, he hasn’t read or written in years.
