Barb & Tortoise

ken & barb fought
so barb went for a walk
in the high weeds by the clubhouse
she took her book on spinning
& scissors for cutting
stems of red clover
& stems of flax
but she wasn’t up to it
so sat on a bicycle tire
hopelessly bent from the time
the ramp didn’t hold
in the distance there were boys playing baseball
they were using a tennis ball & a broom handle
so the sound wasn’t crack
& there was no crowd but the crows
it was far enough away for
her to hear coming the tortoise that arrived
to look for earthworms cooling themselves
in the darkness under the ruined wheel
after a long slide through the morning dew
turtle said why the long face
barb said blah blah if
blah blah then
blah blah blah when when when
turtle opened his shell a little
crossed his front legs
eased down to the dust
turned his head toward the game
as if judging something
other than skill of performance
turned back to barb
you would do well he said
to look for worms with me
not to eat in your case
but to ask how they can do it
without eyes
without hands

We thought we were real dolls

After church bells tolled then clothes
    discarded, we saw ourselves
to be paper shells stuffed with rags
