my sweet Sweet William
beer barrel chested Czech
we romp, stomp and swirl
we swoop, laugh and twirl
zephyr zest accordian
oompa tuba timed
play No Beer in Heaven
play a flouncy Blue Skirt
play Pennsylvania Polka
play mad, half-step folk
one two three one two three
clap clap clap clap
we fling in fast circles
nothing held back, tap
that sense of ourselves
funloved in each other
we fly, floored and fearless
like light-footed wonder
I love that I can see and hear this. It reminds me of “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke but I think your dance is much happier.
This is one of my happiest memories of my step-dad! I will always associate the polka with him!
I love the tactile immediacy of this poem Kathleen. I don’t know how to polka but I am right there anyway.
Thanks Bobby! I know this isn’t the first time you have seen this poem!
