Sound of Footsteps, Crunching

Blinking
she enters the kitchen
where someone else has left
on the light.
There are no roaches to scatter
she remembers those days
when one apartment was sprayed
they all shuffled to the next
until at last they started over
with the first
and calling the super just
made having pet birds impossible
with the choking poison
that was meant to kill the
jurasic crustations.
Too bad that time was wasted
being young and needing to have friends over
and hoping she could get the light on
and the running brown breathing bots
our of sight before the new boyfriend saw.
A lot of candlelit evenings for sure
romantic or not
just living through it till the next move.

Love the title, and the line “There are no roaches to scatter” reflects the emotioonality perfectly.
