June 2nd is National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Supporters are encouraged to wear orange,
Which is a hunter’s signal for ‘there is a human here.’
Maybe if he had worn orange to that party,
They would have know that there was a human there.
Would have seen seen him seven months in the future,
Cap and gown, and high school diploma.
Not hospital gown and death certificate.
Would have seen his family the way we were at his brother’s wedding,
Song, dance, and celebration.
Not funeral procession, and broken hearts.
Maybe they did not see the human present,
Just saw a pair of sneakers and a good dunk shot,
Just another brown boy- like them..
But not like them.
Because they are human lives, present.
And he is our reason to wear orange.
Moving and crucial observation. Thank you.
Thank you Morghan, I love it. True words spoken well
Poetry can be social, political, regional, or anything the poet chooses…
This poem broke my heart. I’m changing shirts.
This is amazing.
