once in the bad days
when ken locked up for days
barb shat & it looked like an ant
(ants are pretty big to barb & ken)
& ken pointed at it & laughed
‘What a small turd!’ he yelled
& barb not hearing jest in his voice
but scorn & beneath that
a little middle-aged terror

& then she kept it
to herself
(like she always did)
she didn’t remind him that his depression
& neglect had kept her up at night
worrying an ulcerative
pocket inside her it forming in her like
the the hole a rat makes
clawing to escape a shoebox

now in these better days
a solitary real ant is
crawling across her bathroom floor
hours after she bleached it
the floor must smell of nothing she thinks
it must be a long walk she thinks
it must be lonely

ant says
I go here and I go there my ass
dropping pheromones like
pages of a romance novel
go ahead laugh if you want to
my cries for love
may go unheeded but
I find my way home
