“In Washington County” by Marianne Worthington

We walked a trail
found snail
homes abandoned
and wild ginger.

We saw the remnants
of animals we couldn’t
see: urine, twinkling
on leaf litter.

We heard the canopy
mocking us above
the crows tattling
our intrusion.

We emerged unruffled
as if the woods
had cloaked us
in velvety moss.
