I wish we had a flag to hang half mast.
It could be a rainbow bonded
to the ground, a circle of joined hands,
every shade of life, all ages, all religions,
as if our faiths can mark us differently.
I wish I had a banner with the words:
I am bisexual and loving and
Don’t worry about my sex life,
and I won’t obsess on yours
but I really need my insides out—
the partnerships I’ve shared
that bind me still to life, support
I give to family and friends,
the richness of community
that nurtures me on all sides,
the wisdom and the courage
of conviction shared across
the country, round the world,
the recognition of our limits,
our failures and defeats,
and courage to start up again,
glad to be just who I am—
I don’t want to ask permission.
I need to find a flag.
beautiful and courageous,Rae. your first
verse reminded me of something i wrote
a couple of days ago…not sure why…
PEACE
If we could sweep away
the clutter from all the
world’s religions
I believe we would see they are
all seeking the same something
that is forever beyond words,
but if there was a word for it
that word would be peace…
Thanks, James. PEACE is beautiful! I wish I could put that on my flag!
Rilke said poetry comes from the anonymous self, which suggests to me that we must not allow our ego to filter our poetic stirrings as the try to find the light. your poem reminded me how powerful simple honesty can be.
You’re a gem! Rilke makes my bones shiver. I am glad to have this insight. Thank you!
