Before I go in, I stand in the mud room
and stare at glass cases of pinned-back moths
  –  a curious collection of her enemies.
I hear the wisp of broom sweep away
the caked clay from my November boots
then turn to see her straighten to eye level.
You remind me of Muddy Waters, she says,
not your color, but your disposition

Her kitchen floor piled with willow-switches
for basket-weaving, she grabs one to whip
my legs, makes me dance around her warm stove.
Hold still, she says.  I’m as still as a landscape,
as still as leaf fall on a motionless day
when she puts her hands on the back of my neck
