Mom, Dad, just reading one other
as if their thoughts– their hearts–
have no bounds. Remnants of what was,
what is, and what is to come– all piled up
in overflowing plenty, all my blessings
under one roof– inside one family fridge.

“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Linndner ѕaid, adding that the growth

Lindner ѕaid “ambition” was needеd to keеp EU public finances in order, orr to put

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited
more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later
in the day to gauge its policy path. The dollar held steady,
giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close
at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC)
set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker
than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time
since Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new
on stimulus plans to revive the economy. The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad
dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the
year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside
surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora,
adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help
further lift China asset sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade
well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.
2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,
up about 0.09% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

NEW YORK, Nov 21 (Reuters) – An index of global stocks edged higher in choppy trading on Thursday
as markets digested lackluster revenue forecasts from artificial-intelligence chipmaker
Nvidia, while oil prices climbed amid rising tension from the Russia-Ukraine war.
Shares of Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company and a major contributor to the gains this year in the benchmark S&P 500, hit a record high early in the session before reversing direction and declining about 1%.
The chipmaker forecast its slowest revenue growth in seven quarters on Wednesday.
“(Nvidia’s) results are still good but I think the disappointment came from maybe not quite as much of an upward guide on the Q4 number for the top line,” said
Garrett Melson, portfolio strategist at Natixis Investment Managers
in Boston.
On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial
Average were lifted by energy, industrials and consumer staples stocks.
Communication services stocks were the biggest drag on the Nasdaq,
driven by losses in Alphabet, which is down about 6%. U.S.
prosecutors argued on Wednesday that Alphabet must divest its popular Chrome browser to end Google’s search monopoly.
The Dow rose 0.84% to 43,774.53, the S&P 500 gained 0.24% to 5,931.60
and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.40% to 18,890.59.
MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe was up 0.14% to 849
after losing ground early in the session. European shares were up 0.37%.
“The market seems to be looking for a narrative right now and is in a little bit of a void for any news that can shape the direction of things,” Melson added.
Bitcoin soared and is closing in on the $100,000 milestone.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency has benefited
from expectations that the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump will be crypto-friendly.
Bitcoin gained 2.52% to $96,818.00. Ethereum rose 7.33% to $3,306.40.
Markets are also eyeing Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary, who will play
a key role in implementing his agenda of tariffs, tax cuts
and deregulation.
The dollar rose in choppy trading as investors assessed declining weekly
jobless claims, suggesting labor-market strength, and comments from
two Federal Reserve governors on the path of interest rates.
Against the Japanese yen, the dollar weakened
0.63% to 154.45 but it strengthened 0.15% to 0.885 against the Swiss franc.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a
basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose
0.22% to 106.84, with the euro down 0.42% at $1.05.
Oil prices rose more than 1% after Russia and Ukraine exchanged missiles,
raising crude-supply concerns. Brent crude futures rose 1.72% to $74.06.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rallied 1.86% to $70.04.
Spot gold rose, on track for the fourth-consecutive session of gains after hitting a more than one-week high.

to do paperwork for them – not to mention acres
of space – but to me it seems insurmountable.
Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts to reassure
me: ‘It’s really not that much paperwork.
Look, filling in this form would take two minutes.’
Moving on from the theory, we head outside for the practical part of the course.
Here, in large pens, are lots of little pigs which are super cute, so this makes me happy.
I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan. Both the rake and the dustpan have long handles and I like the distance this creates.
It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a flimsy plastic bag on a dog walk.
Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised, and sanitary, distance makes me wonder if – despite the paperwork – pigs might
just trump dogs.
Samantha was worried she might attract stares walking Astrid through town, but
nobody batted an eyelid

Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it looks, and a
lot of treats are required to keep things on track
Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs.
Yes of course! She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a large fishnet stocking, the size
of Santa’s sack. The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s my job to
hang up the sack in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.
This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE! NO! IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER!
TIE IT ROUND THE POST! NO! NOT LIKE THAT! NO!’
I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only this is worse because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and
I cannot see a panic button.
I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered bodies were dumped in a pig pen, to
be eaten by the pigs. Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive.
This definitely happens all the time, according to TV, and now I don’t even know
which is worse, the prospect of being felled by pigs eating through my ankles, or the
pressure to hang the hay correctly.
It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised to amuse the inhabitants of hell.
I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?
Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their owners, so I’ve sourced designer outfits for
my trottered chums. I’d initially looked at diamond chokers by
Dior, because what pig wouldn’t want a diamond collar? But apparently
pigs are happier in harnesses, which fit around the body, not just the neck.
I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their pig, and I am
delighted to discover a pink leopard print harness with a matching lead.
It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search
history.
There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the pink argyle; the florals,
the tartans, and the hearts. There’s the range inspired by
Legally Blonde and the pet carrier that resembles
a pink Chanel handbag.
Then there are the socks…
I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the pigs than I have for myself.
I guess this is what it’s like being a pig parent: #SELFLESS
I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill my dreams of walking a pig.
I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve brought from Urban Pup and she
picks out a pink tartan harness with a matching lead.
I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no.
That’s OK. There is probably some law about only one pig at a time looking this stunning.
When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white buildings with beams.
So how will locals feel about a pig on a lead?
I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s Institute.
However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait with
celebrity antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer Murders and Four Weddings and a
Funeral have all been filmed there.
On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs
never poo where they eat, sleep or socialise,
because they’re very clean, so from day one, without any training, a pig
will go outside to poo.
I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old Amersham, to find that Astrid
has done her business in her carry box. I try not to think about this,
as I hold her lead.
Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m not a massive fan of
walking around looking at things, but I hear the
museum homes a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to sit at.
It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a Tudor banquet.
I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a bit of
wild boar.
Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being welcomed by museum director Briony, we leave pretty much as soon as we arrive.
We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter pig food pellets
to coax Astrid along the pavement. I guess celebrities get their assistants
to walk ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs in the
right direction.

However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself thinking that
it’s definitely easier to walk a dog.
Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings, so Astrid and I head to The Griffin, a private members club,
bistro and bakery, that’s pretty much the Soho House of Amersham.
In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century,
there are gorgeous leather sofas and cosy cushions.
However, I have learnt on my pig keeping course that
pigs are happiest alfresco, so Astrid and I take a seat
on the astro-turf terrace, beneath a pretty parasol that wouldn’t be out of place in a Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.
It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and I are at
our happiest. As I sip a coffee and eye-up a
chocolate brownie (I’m being a celebrity, remember, I don’t actually eat these things),
Astrid puts her trotters up on the seat beside me and enjoys a few pig
food pellets.
Clearly this is our natural environment,
so it’s probably just a matter of time before Astrid is snapped
up by a celebrity to live life first class.
But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I must
head home to wash pig poo off my wellies.
I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid, but as
I think it all over, on the train back to Marylebone, I know that I’ll never keep a pig as a pet.
Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London, and the trickiness of trying to take a pig for a walk, there’s always the fear
that the micro pig might turn out to be not so tiny after all.
I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce “teacup” pigs growing bigger than a bear, and frankly I find it terrifying.
So I’ll leave the pet pigs to the celebrities.

There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.
Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well kept and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing
wood burner; or in the dining room, solid and comfortable, with its old beams,
well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths; it’s
in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full
use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

Lewis’, is Tom’s verdict
We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up
to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who
certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend
around these parts. But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked
Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of
quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally
splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black
pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à
l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp,
the sauce just the right side of bitter. It
comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I
eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest,
most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny
shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of
the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé,
this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a
pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub
designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be
rushed.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency
and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving
arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major
parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount
candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and
a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less
than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus
increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to
influence election outcomes – and the extent to
which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing
the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need
to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but
you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being
injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop
the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot
– saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal
independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems
to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party,
as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a
rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out
that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out
the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling
Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united
crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer
to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such
as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The major parties have long complained about the influence
the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past,
contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of
virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark
art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving
everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before
preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor
and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the
laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions
are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the
years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer
their support, not cynical opposition, to what
is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that
could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things
up’.
