“All I Want” by Jude Lally

is to make it home nights without drawing attention to
myself, before I’m accosted by concerned passersby—
where you trying to go? what can I do?—mostly it’s:
going right up the road and there’s nothing you can do
which seems disappointing news. Sometimes those
offering assistance are unwilling to accept my obstinance:
once I was walked for blocks by two ladies all the way
to my door, or the time I was stopped by a cop who made
me wait while he radioed me a ride. Although I’m glad
people are looking out for me, I wish they’d just let me be.
