The moon is in a killing sign today. It says, Don’t touch
the things you want to thrive, the things you love.
But they touch me. The sounds of spring
roll through me like ripples in a pool. A bee
hums loud inside a viola half its size,
wrestles like a bucking bronc for gold
it finds there. The breeze strokes waves into the grass,
brushes velvet petals. Leaves brush my feet.
The cat twines round my legs on her way to scratch
her back on sun-warmed stone.

So I’ll defy the moon. I’ll touch
all the things I love. I’ll smooth the ground
I plant, I’ll brush the velvet petals. Nuzzle
for incense inside violas. I’ll touch the sounds
and they’ll touch me. I’ll stroke the fur. I’ll clasp
the hand. I’ll pat the arm. I’ll caress and slap
the clay. I’ll clutch this pen
like a lover I can’t let go. Tonight
I’ll lay my hands with care on someone sleeping.

The moon might be surprised. With time,
its edicts can be twisted. What’s wrong right now
is right sometimes. Time’s a rodeo
and I know how to ride.
I stick like cockleburr.
I’ll stick my wrongest ways
until their time comes right.
