“Trust Me, You’re Gonna Love This (or, an Anti-Love Love Poem)” by Leigh Anne Hornfeldt

I already don’t love whatever it is he thinks I’m gonna love because he’s said love and I don’t like that word at all I mean really I really don’t like that word because he’s said it Because it’s vague and overdone Because it’s love Because anyone can say it and be vague about it and overdo it and anyone can mean it too and that’s maybe why I don’t like it too I mean love Really? I hate it Love See? Love lovelovelovelovelove Love Let’s replace love with chair because chair Because why not? Because when I think of chair I think of sitting and sometimes I should just sit and just be but not be in love Just be Do you know what I mean I mean just sitting in a chair and then when I’m done sitting in a chair I can get up and say Wow, I feel great I really chair this chair because I do feel great and I do chair that chair and who knows maybe that chair chairs me back Do you see what I mean? I’m not trying to be difficult here I don’t mean to be so difficult sometimes, so sad sometimes, so angry sometimes, so scared sometimes but sometimes, sometimes, I mean to tell you sometimes I need to not be the things I most am Sometimes I need to not love but then I see your face Your worried face Your tired face and then I know I can’t stop chairing I can’t stop chairing you Because you Because your face Because your tired worried face Because you chair me back That’s why
