“Instruction to a Desert Monk” by Zachary Johnson

Dear Procopius, install your intellect within.
Cover the sun. Silence fire.
Stand in awe and do not sin.

Only oil your own skin
after dark without desire.
And guard each thought when in

this desert: Then,
amid dunes, you will acquire
holy fear, without sin

entering (that murderous Bedouin
of soul) to bury you. Rewire
noetic paths within

your body by tucking chin
to chest and letting breath inspire
wonder. But you must never, ever sin:

Instead (as I have written)
constantly aspire
to contain your intellect within.
My dear Procopius, stand in awe and do not sin.
