“The Amazing Linking Rings” by Bernie DeVille

The first used book I ever bought was a dime.
The yellow cover exclaimed “So You Want to be an Illusionist”
A girl in a Spanish dress floated halfway in a big ring, blindfolded,
while the goateed maestro flourished.
To this day I still stare in the windows of abandoned buildings,
hoping for a stage. A theater populated with a dusty wood box,
a rusting sword, iron cuffs, scorched braziers, velvet curtains
spare battered remnants, some half-remembered invocations
of the mental magic
of childhood.
