“journeys #10” by Carole Johnston

that last summer we cut
birch bark thin paper sails for
our walnut shell boats

painted them with zen poems
dropped boats off the bridge into
the stream playing “Pooh Sticks”

our muddy sneakers squished
along the bank where green snakes
loitered on rocks in the sun

we waved goodbye
to our vanishing child poems
sending them out to sea
