“Pressure to Deny Grace” by Maggie Brewer

Added as a last thought
late in the game
my name was tied
to the e-mail
as if to thwart the young man’s efforts
and make him capitulate.

But something in his pleas
caught my eye
made me stop
to argue his case.
We’re always on the side
of the loser
but this time a prodigy
needed guidance.

Arguing consistency
and congruency
made me question
policies and practices.
When did children
become products
made in “factories” –
assembly line, die cuts, stencils –
that keep them all in line?

When did helping children
become about
only certain students —
only those who would most certainly fail
and ignoring those who strive to succeed?
