“My Mother’s PT” by Pauletta Hansel

My mother at 80 has fallen
for a man whose job it was
to keep her on her feet.
He calls her Larnie-cane, a soft
reminder her own two feet
are not enough to carry her.
He’s my age, her PT (Tom, his name
the only one she never forgets)
and though he’s long since
reassigned, he phones her
on his way from one old lady
to the next. She says,
I think he’s lonely,
trouble with his wife—I hope
she’s not upset he’s calling me.
