of every preparation for the storm
and the oaken bravery
it takes to step out
to face the pouring, pounding rain

of every drenching second spent
pushing through the fierce wind
fighting the frenzy of fisticuff gusts
dodging lightning left and thunder right
all the while, consoling yourself
in the necessity of this action

Regardless
of every squishy sock
and soaked shoe left at the door
in hope that they’ll be dry by morning
Sometimes
the dog still poops in the house.
