Writing Challenge: “Common Object POV” by Leigh Anne Hornfeldt

To start the week off proper, we thought it would be fun to have another writing challenge. Presenting today’s prompt is Kentucky native Leigh Anne Hornfeldt.

Write a poem from the perspective of a common, everyday object. What does the kitchen sink see? How does the dryer feel about being a dryer? What’s the mailbox got to say?

Post your attempt in the comments. And if today’s not your day, go ahead and give one of the other brave souls some congratulations!

Also, we want to thank everyone who contributed to our last poetry contest, courtesy of Jeremy Paden. I am consistently amazed at what our readers are doing.

    The Kitchen Sink

Come. If it is renewal you seek,
    immerse your hands in me.

No lover knows them as I do,
    every gritty crack

    in their ravaged topography.
It is proper to venerate me,

for I am descended from the mouth
of the Euphrates. In the end,

when you have learned what is essential,
you will disavow everything but me.

    Luxurious lavender candle’s phantom flame…
    Frozen effervescent waxy wonder…
    Ever subtle, ever emitting…
    Sweet scent gloriously masking…
    Friendly putrescent drain trap…
The abyss! The Hades of Pasta!

    He Lifts Me Up Again

He sifts through adjectives and adverbs
jots down another metaphor onto his notepad
    hoping for a new perspective,
a new way to say something
that he knows has been said before.
Then he lifts me up again
    to put papers under me
so they won’t be mixed in
    with the commotion that fills
his oaken desk. Here, I hold
    his treasured thoughts until
    he returns for them. Then
    he lifts me up again.
