Rebecca Thomas graduated with a BA in Art Studio with an emphasis in photography from the University of Kentucky. She‘s inspired by finding traces of the human footprint, abandoned for nature to reclaim, and by what people choose to leave behind and how the earth reclaims the scraps.

Each week we will post artwork submitted to Accents in hopes that you are inspired to write and share.

    What Happened?

Tell me. When did I get to be old?
My beard was once fox-tail red,
but now it’s white. A small child mistook me
for Santa Claus. I gaze in the mirror,
and an old man looks back at me.
    The wrinkles are multiplying.

    When did the staircase grow
to be so tall? I used to skip up the steps
with ease, but now I hold to the railing,
and pull myself upward. At times,
I’ve been so down in my back,
I’ve had to use a cane.

In the past, people told me
I was such a fun person, always laughing,
and entertaining them with my antics.
The fun seems to have deteriorated
with age. The Beatles said it best:
“I’m not half the man I used to be.”
