a song he could not finish.
His voice, full of sadness, cracked
as he sang of love lately come.

It is terrible to be old
and know finally that joy
that strips you of forethought.

Here, he, world on the brink,
sang, lost at last, knowing he
would lose what he’d found.

I would have gone to him,
hugged him, whispered,

love is war; come the lull,
all will crumble;

whatever redemption
new love brings, quick
on its heels, the battle lines.

I would have gone to him; instead
I went out to find you.

Jeremy Dae Paden was born in Italy and raised in Central America and the Caribbean. He received his Ph.D. in Latin American literature from Emory. His poems have appeared in such places as the Atlanta Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Cortland Review, Louisville Review, Naugatuck River Review, pluck! and Rattle, among other journals and anthologies. This is his first published collection of poems.
