Growing up in Kentucky

with the Appalachian foothills
visible east and south from the milking parlor
& Lake Cumberland backed up on two sides
of my father’s Seventy acres more or less
farm, I had little time for the pursuits
of happiness my friend Andrew bragged about
when he came around.

He told me I needed to get drunk
to be conscious afterwards of what
he could show me if I would do it;
go with him to meet one of his
wild women friends.
He said my life of milking thirty head
of Holstein & Ayrshire cows
4:30 to 7:30 AM & PM
would not teach me the importance
of a woman’s tit.

Winter, summer, spring & fall,
at daybreak, again at dusk,
I walked pastures beneath a sky
as red as spilled blood.
Andrew, older by seven years, kept
being my friend.
In conversations above the noisy tractor,
I drove him, propped against the Ford’s fender
to my right while the engine strained to pull
two twelve inch plows
or while an eight foot sickle bar
protested in thick timothy & red clover.

I told him time after time
I could not live in his present,
at least not in Clinton County,
& he never once asked my reasons.
I would have told him, perhaps,
that my father needed my help
with the farm so he could work
at the Buick & Chevrolet dealership
in Albany & provide for nine kids
& a wife.

One morning in the five acre field,
he asked me how I thought
Maurice would manage
when I went off to college.
I swear it was my thoughts exactly
when he asked.
It was as though he read me like a poem,
or like cries in the dark of night,
an owl’s hoot beneath a crescent moon
or a whip-poor-will’s unmistakable
song at corn planting time.

Our silence was like a thick
ambush of shadows, a hush the length
& width of the field.
He spoke when I plowed the back-furrow,
telling me I had no present on the farm
& no future. He told me there was only a past.
He vaulted over the fender, avoided the lugs of the
tire, & picked up an arrowhead.
Holding it up, smiling, he said,
you will be just like the man who shot this thing
if you farm for the rest of your life
& threw it as hard as he could across the field,
I’ve got beer in the truck & a woman waiting for you.
