“slipping by” by Marta Dorton

12:33
the time quickly approaches
I lie in bed and watch
red digital numbers update to 12:34

I always think of him then
he used to say that he saw 12:34
on the clock twice a day
our son and I pay homage
to his memory
when we see that number

I felt I had missed his spirit
one minute past 12:34
like a missed opportunity or guest
I anguished in another loss
as if I could have a conversation
or personal experience
had I been aware of 12:34
and him

more often the time slides by
unnoticed, twice a day
as the weeks and years roll on
12:35
