Big Coy-Wolf focuses straight my way. Fur

winter-rich in reddish grays, long bushy tail, fine 

nose and mouth, high ears so tuned he hears 

the mice in shoreline snow, he hears my heart, 

my hunter’s mind. With lordish grace, born to 

fight or race but—bred to try me first—he 

rests rear-end-on-snow, displaying his lithe, spring 

loaded show, his master role, on the stage of white, 

his black eyes knowing, tracking, pressing mine. 

A few yards toward me thinned ice stretches, 

behind him brush and vines entwine bare trees. 

He lives just fine in the margin-land, deep

solitude of frozen air, yet tonight his pack will 

nuzzle, howl, and run the maple bands. No

trapper will find his coy-wolf spirit in flesh. 

No scientist with darts and collars, scales and tags 

will know his world as he, spreading through 

awareness webs to bind the winter sky, the pond, 

and me, all within his weary story-singing soul. 

I carried a rifle once, longing for pelts and skulls

and gleaming teeth. I justified and longed for 

blood on snow. Good to be old and recognize 

the sacred where it dwells, just on the edge of 

flesh and bone, shimmering with stars and 

fields, with questions, Who there? What you want? 

—backing tracks by winds and birds—

in the space we fill with our mutual eyes.
